Mitigating HIV/AIDS in the Education Sector

Photo of 3 men standing under a canopy Mitigation of the HIV/AIDS in education component is tackled from two perspectives

1. involving communities; and
2. integrating life skills curriculum in the teaching process by teachers.

MESA's community involvement component bridges and holistically integrates both aspects. Its goals are two-fold:

1. raise awareness on the importance of having a quality and efficient basic education through having effective school management committees; and
2. empower school communities, SMCs, PTAs, Community leaders, and special cultural groups to determine and take appropriate action to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS within their school communities.

Social Mobilization Campaign (SMC) Conceptual Model

Social Mobilization Campaign (SMC) Conceptual Model

Using the social mobilization campaign conceptual model developed under the GABLE project, MESA is making significant strides in mobilizing communities' involvement in their children's education. The model sets out to enable communities to "discover" their cultural patterns and ways of perceiving and conceptualizing practical life situations. It creates a cadre of sustainable trained personnel (field workers) capable of implementing a methodology that facilitates change among communities. The field staff work with communities through a variety of low cost media such as focus group discussions, meetings, workshops and others to sensitize and allow the people the opportunity to discuss issues at hand in detail, explore and plan the way forward. This sensitization-cum-training phase is almost invariably followed by a myriad of community-based initiatives that actualize the intended objectives of the intervention.
