Community Health and Nutrition, Gender and Education Support – 2 (CHANGES2)

Zambia

CHANGES2 continues USAID’s support to the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Sector Plan. CHANGES2 is an expansion and enhancement of the MOE’s successful CHANGES program that will strengthen basic education teachers’ professional skills, with a special focus on HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation. In addition to support for expansion of the MOE’s school health and nutrition activities to new programmatic and geographical areas, CHANGES2 will empower pupils, teachers, and community members to improve education, gender equity, and health in schools and communities. Through CHANGES2, technical assistance will also be provided to Zambia’s Ministries Health, and Community Development and Social Services.

Anticipated Results:

  • 800 MOE staff trained per year to provide targeted HIV/AIDS prevention education in basic schools.
  • 400 schools per year benefiting from enhanced delivery of basic education services, especially HIV/AIDS prevention education.
  • 400 communities per year benefiting from school-based outreach and HIV/AIDS prevention programs.
  • 260,000 community residents per year benefiting from outreach and HIV/AIDS prevention programs.
  • 4,000 OVCs per year in secondary schools benefiting from scholarships (bursaries) to ensure their retention in school, and playing an active role in HIV/AIDS prevention activities in their schools.
  • 1,200 Teacher Training College pre-service students benefiting from improved training in teaching methodologies, including the enhanced provision of HIV/AIDS and health education.
In addition to the CHANGES2 core activities, aimed at achieving the results listed above, the CHANGES2 program has received funds from the USAID-funded Fast Track Initiative (FTI) to conduct activities in support of Zambia’s Community Schools. These efforts are designed to support the MOE’s on-going commitment and investment in Community Schools as a sustainable part of Education For All (EFA) planning. For more information on CHANGES2’s FTI activities, please read the CHANGES2 FTI Fact Sheet.

Geographical Coverage:

CHANGES2’s central office is based in the capital, Lusaka, and assists the MOE to deliver strengthened basic (including health) education in Southern, Lusaka, Central and Copperbelt Provinces through existing MOE structures. Provincial program offices are located in Livingstone, Lusaka, Kabwe and Ndola to coordinate district and zonal education activities. CHANGES2 also delivers scholarship support services in the same four provinces, as well as in Eastern and Northwestern Provinces.

CHANGES2 concentrates its basic education activities in Southern, Lusaka, Central, and Copperbelt Provinces. Scholarships for OVCs are provided to secondary school pupils in those four provinces, as well as in Eastern and Northwestern Provinces.
