Education for Girls
Objective 4: Provide support and encouragement for girls to increase access to quality education

While girls' enrollments and persistence in basic education (10 years from Standard to Lower Secondary) are nearly the same as, and in some places better than that of boys, their performance in school examinations are frequently lower than those of boys, especially in mathematics and the sciences. This means that they are less likely to go on to higher levels, and certainly less likely to specialize in those subjects. Also, girls are less likely to complete school because of early pregnancy and marriages, especially in rural areas, frequently reflecting cultural practices and norms. These phenomena results both in fewer female role models as teachers of those subjects and fewer females are unavailable able to be placed where there are most needed.

MKEZA will carry out activities to deliberately and systematically address the needs of girls. Activities include assessing the current situation, identifying the challenges to girls' access and their poor performance particularly in science and mathematics, and supporting initiatives that promote girls' education.
