Welcome to the MKEZA Project MKEZA Logo

MKEZA means Mradi wa Kuendeleza Elimu Zanzibar and is the Swahili translation of the project's official title: Improving the Quality of Learning in Zanzibar. MKEZA is supported with a grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The project aims to improve the quality of learning in Zanzibar by working with communities and government from the pre-school to secondary school levels.

MKEZA activities are implemented by its project partners, the American Institutes for Research (AIR) and Aga Khan Foundation. A core team in Zanzibar lead the project implementation by adding technical depth to workplans and activities in partnership with the Professional Development Centre (PDC); Teacher Advancement Program (TAP), the Madrasa Resource Centre (MRC) and the NGO Resource Center (NGORC). The core team also provides professional and technical support to the Ministry of Education Culture and Sports (MOECS) and liaises with the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, which provides technical inputs in interventions for children with learning disabilities. Special focus is placed on building on the EQUIP 1 consortium strengths, working closely with government for sustainable programming.

The project's activities are designed to support USAID/Tanzania's strategic framework in support of the government of Zanzibar's MOECS, the primary provider and policy maker of education in the country. MOECS with USAID/Tanzania, identified the need for the education system to focus on improving the quality of learning through active learning and other pedagogical practices especially for mathematics, science, civics, and English.

Emphasis is on enhancing government mentoring and training capacities, supporting communities in school management, strengthening teacher skills, promoting participation of local civil society organizations in the education system, and equipping classrooms. By stressing themes that reach out and include vulnerable populations, such as those with disabilities and girls, the program activities improve educational access to these groups.

Furthermore, MKEZA is strengthening the support network for Zanzibar's education system by building unique partnerships to increase resources, support, and accountability by working through existing public and private institutions.
