More Effective Schools
MESA has been charged under IR 9.2 to make schools more effective. Making schools more effective is the cornerstone to achieving MESA's objectives and many activities are planned in support of this concept. The following activities in support of schools have occurred in the opening months of the project.
Revisiting the Social Studies Curriculum (standards 5-8)
MESA will incorporate the new primary level (standards 5-8) social studies curriculum into all schools in Malawi and develop teachers skills to effectively use the curriculum in the classroom. It will be carried out in 3 phases: 1) development of resource materials; 2) development of national capacity in citizen education; and 3) training of classroom teachers.
In partnership with MESA, The Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) has developed the materials needed to carry out the training of core trainers and Standards 5-8 teachers. The new Standard 5-8 Social Studies Curriculum focuses on concepts and principles of Social Studies, critical contemporary issues such as HIV/AIDS, gender equity, drug and substance abuse, and democracy and human rights. Each syllabus teaches these issues within the context of Malawi regional and national civic knowledge, Malawi's role in Africa and Africa's role in the world. Supplementary teacher's guides and pupil's books are available to enhance the syllabus.
Materials:
- Social Studies Teaching Syllabus for Standards 5,6,7 & 8
- Social Studies Training Manual
- Social Studies Supplementary Teacher's Book for Standard 6
- Social Studies Supplementary Pupil's Books for Standard 6
- Social Studies Supplementary Teacher's Guide for Standard 5
Trainings:
- Training of core trainers and Standards 5 & 6 teachers
- 9,479 teachers nationwide have been trained on the new Social Studies curriculum.
Developing Learning Resources
Recognizing the dire shortage of teaching and learning materials, MESA took up the charge to produce and infuse the school system a supply of support materials for teachers and pupils. In its partnership with MESA, MIE is providing printing, typesetting, design and editing services for manuals and resources to aide teaching and learning.
MESA has printed and distributed the following resources to schools and Teacher development centers (TDCs):
It is anticipated that the materials will, once in schools, greatly enrich the school system and enhance both teachers' motivation for teaching and pupils' motivation for learning and thus transforming the school into an effective center of learning.
