August-September 2003: Project Start-up
This section includes photos of the MESA team members and partners engaged in meetings and discussions to kick-off the MESA work and the refurbishing of the MESA office in Zomba, Malawi:

September-October 2003: District Briefing Meeting
This section includes photos from a Phalombe briefing meeting with political leaders from different political parties in the district. The meeting managed to lock "rival" politicians into dialogue with a common goal to map out how cross-cutting issues, such as educational quality and HIV/AIDS, could be dealt with. Similar briefings took place in Mzimba South, Kasungu and Machinga.

Community Mobilization
  • Theater for Development
    The first Theatre for Development (TFD) performance was done at Mchilima Primary School, Puteya Education Zone, Traditional Authority Mposa in Machinga District. The play was created using findings from the action research done by the TFD Troupe.

  • Field Worker Training
    MESA conducted a field worker training for PEAs and CDAs in Kasungu district to the support the project's community mobilization activities. The participants were equipped with appropriate strategies for sensitizing and mobilizing communities in order to promote quality education. The field/extension workers drew action plans on how they would direct reach their respective communities.

Radio Program "Chimvano Cha Mabvu"
MESA Project aired its first radio program on October 24th, 2003. The broadcast is aired nationally via the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation every Wednesday from 6:45 pm to 7:00 pm. The program aims at disseminating project activities to the whole nation.

Reading Campaign
MESA introduced a reading campaign to improve children's reading in response to the baseline survey findings, which indicated that approximately 95% of the pupils Standard 3 could not read. Training included teachers as well as community members and included lessons on how to produce of reading materials using resources from the local environment; how to use a reading calendar to promote daily reading; and was reinforced though displays and open days.

44th USAID/Malawi Anniversary Ceremony
USAID held a ceremony "celebrating 44 years of productive partnerships between the peoples of the Republic of Malawi and the United States of America" on October 19, 2004. The new president of Malwai, Dr. Bingu wa Mutarika was the guest of honor. MESA helped showcase the past decade of human capacity and education development USAID supported.
