The ultimate focus of MESA is to improve the effectiveness of schools leading to greater pupil outcomes. More effective schools will lead to higher pupil persistence, lower repetition, fewer dropouts and increased pupil learning.
The process begins by improving teachers' professional skills - both in content knowledge (e.g., civics education, HIV/AIDS awareness, life skills education) and instructional practices (e.g., continuous assessment, TALULAR, classroom management). MESA will also improve school effectiveness through the infusion of new resources including improving physical infrastructure of teacher education at Domasi College and Mzuzu University and facilitating the production and distribution of textbooks and other classroom resources. In addition, MESA will focus on community participation in the classroom, and making school management committees (SMCs) and parent-teacher associations (PTAs) more effective. It is through this process that MESA will address and mitigate critical social concerns, particularly HIV/AIDS, that impinge on access, persistency and quality of basic education. The design of MESA is intentionally holistic and its approach flexible to accomodate additional interventions as they arise from pre-set activities, stakeholders discourse, and teacher and pupil needs. This website shares this journey to improving basic education in Malawi. The goal of this website is to provide details about the interventions, the lessons learned and the impact they have. These sections will be updated periodically. In addition to a written log, a photo gallery will provide a pictoral log of MESA, its activities and impact. MESA Forum, the project newsletter, provides a colorful and informative look at MESA's impact. Background information to the project provides the context in which MESA operates and a section is available to understand more about Malawi. Finally, there is a section with links to learn more about Malawi, and those involved in the work related to MESA.
