CASE STUDY: Mitigating HIV/AIDS in the Education Sector

"MESA, A stream that brings life back into our villages" - Embangweni School

Embangweni F.P. School is situated within Loudon Mission Station of the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia in Mzimba South Education District. The school is surrounded by eleven villages: Champhonya Banda, Kaseka Nyirenda, Sinda Nkhoma, Malizweni Lungu, Joseph Ziba, Forster Chitete Jere and Simeon Jere under Inkosi Mzukuzuku in Ephangweni Zone.

Care of orphans, HIV/AIDS education dissemination, life skills teaching, and reading campaign promotion were not issues of priority at the school. Today, with the help of the MESA project, they are as significant as precious stones and all the stakeholders around the school cherish them. " Issues that help us to realistically combat HIV/AIDS make life for the orphans less painful and worth living and are a stream that brings life back into our villages" commented one village head Joseph Ziba.

Life skills teaching was a subject in principle but never acted upon. Today MESA has revamped the issue into reality. Various life skills programs have been established at the school. Under home economics, there is needle craft, tailoring, knitting and cookery with 132 girls and 98 boys under the tutorship of Ms C.T. Kamanga and Mr. Sitambuli Banda.
