Pichet's Struggle to Study
Sok Pichet at school
Sok Pichet is 15 years old and studies in Krek Primary School in Kampong Cham Province. Pichet has a very sad but also encouraging story to tell. Four years ago, the family was hit by a tragedy when his father passed away. Only 2 years later, his mother also passed away which made Pichet and his little brother orphans. People said that Pichet's parents lost their lives due to AIDS but Pichet doesn't know if that is true. Pichet and his brother now live in a small hut on the land of their neighbors with their grandmother who is 68 years old. His grandmother bakes and sells cake for a living, which gives the family an average income of less than $1 a day. Every morning at 3 am, the grandmother prepares the cakes and the boys help her. However, she also wanted the boys to go to school but at times it was very difficult. Luckily, they were both selected for scholarship support from ESCUP and Pichet is now one of the best students in his class.

"I love my school and enjoy studying and working with my friends. We all respect each other and help each other. We play together during break time and work together in class. No one looks down on me. I do not feel discriminated against because my family is very poor. I am very grateful to my grandmother who has worked so hard to support my studies even though she has a very hard life and she is very old. I wish all parents do the same for their children. …. In the future, I want to be a teacher so that I can support my family, especially my grand mother" Pichet said.
