Early in the morning on March 15, 2007, a group of children gathered at the ESCUP office in Kampong Cham These children all suffer from cleft palates and hope to get free surgery provided by Operation Smile. They learned about this initiative from ESCUP staff members and through information from school directors and teachers who received flyers with details about Operation Smile's mission. The families had some concerns about going to Phnom Penh, as many of them had never traveled outside their own province and they also worried about the additional costs for travel and accommodation. ESCUP ensured all costs would be covered by either Operation Smile or ESCUP and that ESCUP would arrange transportation. The children and accompanying parents traveled with ESCUP staff to Phnom Penh for screening at the Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital. Happily, all seven children were selected for surgery. They stayed at the hospital for ten days and returned home with a brand new smile and a much brighter future.
