Empowering Young People: Impressions of a planning session with a Youth Group
Group of youth prioritizing issues together
It is a sunny Tuesday in March when 12 young people from Kor Village in Kampong Cham meet to-gether in the village mosque. They have volunteered to set up a youth group for their village to pro-mote a youth friendly environment. In the previous meeting, youngsters held elections to select the chair and vice chairpersons of the group. Today will be allocated for the identification of issues that need to be improved in their village. They will also prepare an action plan to promote positive change in the village. The session is facilitated by staff members from World Education and its partner or-ganization, Cambodian Islamic Youth Association. Several issues such as clean environment, health and hygiene, the importance of education, and domestic violence were discussed. Through an active and participatory process, they prioritized the environmental issues that they wished to address, re-sulting in an action plan for activities to improve the village. These activities include an environ-mental campaign and household visits to talk about health and hygiene.
