A Bright Future for a Community Teacher from the Cham Community
Him Roty (19) attends school
Him Roty (19) comes from a Muslim family in Tbong Khmom District of Kampong Cham Province. She was able to complete Grade 9 with scholarship support from KAPE, a local NGO, under the OPTIONS program, which is funded by the US Dept of Labor. Many of her friends dropped out of school before Grade 9 so she is very grateful to have been able to complete lower secondary school. But when she finished school, there were few job opportunities so she eventually decided to work at home to support her family through household work. When the Commune Chief announced that they were looking for Community Teachers for primary schools in her district, however, she was very excited and decided to apply. Roty is now teaching Grade 3 in a nearby school. She explained that the training provided by ESCUP has been very interesting and useful. During her interview, it was clear that Rothy was very proud to be a teacher and that she now had a respected job. She feels that she can be a role model for other girls in her community and, therefore, tries to share her experience with others. However, reflecting on her first five months as primary school teacher, she acknowledged that teaching is exciting but also very challenging. She hopes to further develop her teaching skills through additional training, reading books, learning from other teachers, and participating in micro-teaching sessions.
