Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Bi-lingual Classroom Assistants (BCAs)

More Information

Problem: Educational provision is not relevant to the special needs of children whose first language is not Khmer

Activity: In schools with large minority populations, schools recruit local teaching assistants who speak the indigenous language to assist state teachers in teaching minority children who do not speak Khmer well.

  • Community volunteers

  • Orientation - $2.50 per day per person for 1 day
  • Teacher remuneration - $10 per month per assistant

Student Associations

Activity: Children in each school receive support to set up associations that facilitate learning about local cultures (e.g., teaching younger children, researching local culture and reporting back to peers, etc.) and the natural environment.

Extracurricular Clubs

Activity: Teachers offer extracurricular clubs for students who are interested in learning more about various subjects that are either not included in the curriculum or are taught in a way that does not seem relevant to students. The clubs are student led and involve student centered learning experiences including field trips, theatre performances, writing short stories or poems, playing games, role plays, producing materials and being responsible for the planning and use of the budget.

Resources Needed:
  • Teacher/Facilitator - 3000 Riel per hour
  • Budget for materials, trips, resources - $130 - $150 per club/year
  • Space to meet - usually a classroom during out of school hours

Community Youth Groups

Activity: A community-based youth group consists of about 15 to 20 youth, either in lower secondary school or outside of school, who commit to the program which focuses on self-development and the development of the others. Participants volunteer to spend their free time planning and working with school children from different ethnic groups.
