Primary School Scholarships

Problem: Low enrollment rates at the primary school level because families cannot afford to send their children to school

Activity: The local community sets up a committee that conducts a survey to identify poor children using standardized interview instruments. Children are identified based on scores on this instrument. Standard scholarship packages are then distributed to selected students three times per year.

Resources Needed:
  • Materials for scholarship support - $7 per child
  • Surveyors - $1 per day per surveyor
  • Stationery (for surveys)
  • Travel money (for monitoring)

Lower Secondary School Scholarships

Problem: Low enrollment rates at the lower secondary school level because families cannot afford to send their children to school

Activity: Local stakeholders set up a committee made up of representatives from the local high school, school clusters, and communities. Children are encouraged to apply for a scholarship. The local committee conducts a survey using a standard interview form. Candidates are selected based on scores on this instrument. Committees distribute standard packages to selected students at least three times per year.

Emergency School Buildings / Intermediate Classrooms (ICRs)

More Information

Problem: Long distances to schools prevent some children from enrolling

Activity: Schools receive funds to construct temporary buildings that can be built quickly and at minimum cost in order to accommodate educational service in those areas that have none at all or for a particular grade. This intervention is intended as an intermediary measure until more permanent structures can be built.
