Bi-lingual Classroom Assistants (BCAs)

Problem: State teachers posted in language minority areas are unable to communicate with their students

Activity: In schools with large minority populations, schools recruit local teaching assistants who speak the indigenous language to assist state teachers in teaching minority children who do not speak Khmer well.

Resources Needed:
  • Community volunteers
  • Teacher trainers
  • Orientation - $2.50 per day per person for 1 day
  • Teacher remuneration - $10 per month per assistant

Supplementary Khmer Language (SKL)

More Information

Problem: Children in language minority areas have difficulty with the curriculum because it is in Khmer

Activity: Teachers in minority areas receive special training to help minority children learn Khmer language as a tool to improve their learning.

Resources Needed:
  • Teacher trainers
  • Teacher Remuneration - $2.50 per day per person for 3 days
  • Stationery for training - $15 per group
  • Learning materials

Community Teachers

More Information

Problem: Low national language proficiency lowers educational performance among minority children

Activity: Local Cluster School Committee (LCSC)/Commune Education For All Commission (CEFAC) select local community members in order to work as teachers in the schools. Teachers are trained by the ESCUP program. Because these teachers come from the local community, they are able to speak the local language.

Resources Needed (provided through ESCUP central budget):
  • Teacher volunteers
  • Funds for salary
  • Teacher trainers
  • Materials for classes
