Primary School Scholarships

More Information

Problem: High dropout rates at the primary school level because families cannot afford to send their children to school

Activity: The local community sets up a committee that conducts a survey to identify poor children using standardized interview instruments. Children are identified based on scores on this instrument. Standard scholarship packages are then distributed to selected students three times per year.

Resources Needed:
  • Materials for scholarship support - $7 per child
  • Surveyors - $1 per day per surveyor
  • Stationery (for surveys)
  • Travel money (for monitoring)

Lower Secondary School Scholarships

More Information

Problem: High dropout rates at the lower secondary school level because families cannot afford to send their children to school

Activity: Local stakeholders set up a committee made up of representatives from the local high school, school clusters, and communities. Children are encouraged to apply for a scholarship. The local committee conducts a survey using a standard interview form. Candidates are selected based on scores on this instrument. Committees distribute standard packages to selected students at least three times per year.

Community Teachers

More Information

Problem: Incomplete schools depress completion rates

Activity: Local Cluster School Committee (LCSC)/Commune Education For All Commission (CEFAC) select local community members in order to work as teachers in the schools. Teachers are trained by the ESCUP program.

Resources Needed (provided through ESCUP central budget):
  • Teacher volunteers
  • Funds for salary
  • Teacher trainers
  • Materials for classes

Life Skills for Girls at Risk (Curriculum Enhancement)

Problem: High dropout among girls

Activity: Local Cluster School Committees (LCSCs) identify those schools in the cluster with particularly high rates of dropout among girls and organize special life skills classes for girls with histories of dropout and poor attendance. Attendance is contingent on attendance of the life skills classes, which usually consist of home economics topics, such as sewing and cooking.

Resources Needed:
  • Materials for instruction: $250 per school
  • Remuneration for teachers: $0.50/hour x 4 hours/week x 10 weeks x 5 teachers
  • Travel funds for home visits to absent students

Life Skills for Boys at Risk (Curriculum Enhancement)

Problem: High dropout among boys

Activity: Local Cluster School Committees (LCSCs) identify those schools in the cluster with particularly high rates of dropout among boys and organize special life skills classes for girls with histories of dropout and poor attendance. Attendance is contingent on attendance of the life skills classes, which usually consist of topics in carpentry and masonry.

Resources Needed:
  • Materials for instruction: $250 per school
  • Remuneration for teachers: $0.50/hour x 4 hours/week x 10 weeks x 5 teachers
  • Travel funds for home visits to absent students

Emergency School Buildings / Intermediate Classrooms (ICRs)

More Information

Problem: Incomplete schools cause high dropout rates and depress completion rates

Activity: Schools receive funds to construct temporary buildings that can be built quickly and at minimum cost in order to accommodate educational service in those areas that have none at all or for a particular grade. This intervention is intended as an intermediary measure until more permanent structures can be built.

Child Seeking Schools (Mapping)

More Information

Problem: Children have dropped out of school

Activity: Local schools and communities conduct a survey in order to identify the children out of school on a map. These children then receive special services from the school (e.g., scholarships) to enroll.

Resources Needed:
  • Surveyors - $1 per day per person x 5 days
  • Survey
  • Stationery for mapping - $10 per school
  • Travel money
