Community Teachers

Problem: Teacher shortages cause large class sizes

Activity: Local Cluster School Committee (LCSC)/Commune Education For All Commission (CEFAC) select local community members in order to work as teachers in the schools. Teachers are trained by the ESCUP program.

Resources Needed (provided through ESCUP central budget):
  • Teacher volunteers
  • Funds for salary
  • Teacher trainers
  • Materials for classes

Emergency School Buildings / Intermediate Classrooms (ICRs)

More Information

Problem: Large class sizes exist because there are not enough schools

Activity: Schools receive funds to construct temporary buildings that can be built quickly and at minimum cost in order to accommodate educational service in those areas that have none at all or for a particular grade. This intervention is intended as an intermediary measure until more permanent structures can be built.

  • Labor costs
  • Construction materials

Village-Based Remedial Support for Slow Learners

More Information

Problem: Large class sizes prevent attention to special learning needs

Activity: Schools provide children who fail the first term opportunities to study with a teacher in their village so they receive special help in learning

Resources Needed:
  • Teacher trainers - $2.50 per day per trainer x 2 days
  • Training materials - $25 per group
  • Materials for classes
  • Remuneration for teachers - $0.50/hour per teacher x 4 hours/week x 16 weeks
  • Site set-up - $15/site

Home-Based Remedial Support for Slow Learners

  • Teacher trainers - $2.50 per day per trainer x 2 days
  • Training materials - $25 per group
  • Materials for home instruction
  • Remuneration for teachers - $0.50/hour per teacher x 4 hours/week x 16 weeks
  • Site set-up - $15/site
  • Teacher travel costs

Preparation of Multi-grade Classrooms

Problem: Schools have too few children to make a separate class

Activity: In schools with too few students at specific grade levels, teachers learn about multi-grade teaching so schools can open multi-grade classrooms.

Resources Needed:
  • Teacher Training - Provided through ESCUP central budget
  • Teaching aids - $20 per teacher
