1. Introduction

The School Self Assessment form is a tool that has been developed by the Ministry of Education Youth and Sports (MoEYS) in Cambodia to be used by schools for self assessment. In the ESCUP program clusters select one or more of their best schools and conduct an honest and critical self-assessment of performance to improve local educational practices across all CFS dimensions. Ideally this should be done twice a year, at the end of Semesters 1 and 2. Based on the results of the self assessment, schools should decide which areas they are going to improve upon and how they will go about it.

2. Objectives
  • For school to be able to assess their own strengths and weaknesses.
3. Target groups

All CFS schools and teachers.

4. Information on implementation

Training for the use of the school assessment tool is based on a cascade model with ESCUP staff providing training for provincial level MoEYS staff who subsequently provide training for district level MoEYS staff. The district level staff are then responsible for training cluster heads and school directors. The training is usually one and a half days long and include topics such as understanding the reasons for school assessment and classroom assessment, how to give feedback to teachers, and how to plan based on what is learned during the assessment process. Practical opportunities are also given at a local school to use the assessment tool. This form of assessment is formative and is used throughout the year to help schools and teachers monitor their progress. Summative assessment must also be done in schools. This is done in two ways. Firstly schools may assess themselves. This is called internal assessment. This will involve the district staff, Technical Support Group member (TSG) and school director. Secondly, MoEYS, PoE and ESCUP project staff may assess the school as part of their monitoring and evaluation program. This is called external assessment. The results of the external assessment can be used to compare the performance of one school to another one in the same cluster in the same year or to compare the same school from one year to another. Sometimes, the assessment results from each cluster is also used as a consideration for whether funding should be provided for the next school year by the ESCUP project.
