Increasing Child Readership:    English    Khmer
1. Introduction

In many schools in Cambodia (and other developing countries), there are few or no books or other print materials available. Without these materials it is very hard for children to develop literacy skills. It is also very difficult to inspire children to want to learn to read when there is no reason to and no modeling of reading going on around them. School libraries can fulfill a very important function in terms of ensuring that children have access to reading materials and a safe quiet space to engage with those materials. Many of the libraries in ESCUP target area schools were poorly resourced and sometimes not well maintained at the inception of the program. Through the School Improvement Grants (SIGs), schools are able to budget for library supplies such as materials, furniture, floor coverings, and posters. Some schools have also used some of the SIG funds to repair the library building.

2. Primary Objectives
  • To provide children with access to reading materials so that they will develop an interest in reading and become increasingly confident and independent readers.
  • To provide children with a safe, quiet and attractive space to engage with books and other printed materials.
3. Target group

Children and teachers in ESCUP target area schools.

4. Information on Implementation

Through a joint planning process involving school staff and community members, school clusters develop School Improvement Plans. If schools have included libraries on their plans, they can receive funds for resources through the cluster. ESCUP may help with the ordering and distribution of these. The resources will include books, posters, puzzles and games. The school is responsible for looking after the library and resources and should also encourage the children in assisting with this role.
