Standards
ERP believes that the development and application of Educational Standards is a key pillar of the education reform process. In short, Standards are the entry point for quality student learning. As such, each and every ERP activity incorporates Standards in order to ensure institutionalization across the entire education system.
The Context for Standards
The Egyptian education system, the largest education system in the Middle East, is plagued by weakly prepared teachers, high class density and a centralized bureaucracy ill-equipped to address local needs. In order to address these problems, the MOE developed Standards in five domains:
- The Educator
- The Effective School
- Management Excellence
- Community Participation
- Curriculum Content & Learning Outcomes
These Standards present a clear vision of what is meant by quality education and provides benchmarks to measure competence and level of learning.
Implementing Standards in Egypt
Education reform based on Standards necessitates the need to determine how to put these Standards into practice. Implementing Standards requires that stakeholders have knowledge of what Standards are and have a voice in how they are implemented.
Through foundational training, basic knowledge of Standards is provided to stakeholders throughout Egypt. This knowledge sets the foundation for additional trainings that build knowledge on specific Standards domains. The knowledge of Standards is eventually brought back into the classroom by trained teachers and administrators, leading to the ultimate goal: quality student learning.
