EMACK Intervention Areas Large Class Size Training: Teachers List their Training Expectations

Working with Children

  •   Health interventions: Under the aegis of the Ministry of Health, children are dewormed
      and parents educated on common childhood health ailments.

  •   Child-to-child clubs: Children's clubs are formed in primary schools and help children
      learn about transition, nutrition, persons with disabilities and HIV/AIDS.

  •   Community-based feeding programs: at ECD centers are supported and strengthened.
Working with Teachers
  •   Child-centered teaching methodologies: ECD, primary school and Koranic religious school
      teachers are trained to focus on children when they teach, and to develop low or no-cost
      teaching and learning materials.

  •   Quality learning in large classes: Lower primary school teachers are given classroom
      management and teaching skills for increasing learning in the large classes the have resulted from the
      declaration of Free Primary Education in Kenya.

  •   Reducing barriers to vulnerable children succeeding in school: ECD and primary school
      teachers are trained in approaches to promoting students' understanding, tolerance and acceptance of
      people affected by HIV/AIDS, a disability, poverty and other characteristics that make people 'different'.

  •   Transition from home or pre-school to primary school: ECD and lower primary school
      teachers are equipped with creative approaches to make the transition from home or pre-school to
      primary school less stressful for children.
Working with Schools
  •   School Management Committees (SMCs): ECD and primary school SMCs are trained in
      leadership, resource mobilization and effective financial and administrative school management.

  •   Small Grants: Small grants are awarded to ECD center and primary school SMCs for community
      initiatives such as classroom furniture, renovation and construction of classrooms, latrines and
      storage facilities, and the purchase of playground equipment. Additional in-kind small grants, in the form
      of school textbooks and other learning materials are granted directly to ECD centers and primary schools.
Working with Communities/Parents
  •   Community seminars and awareness campaigns: Community members are made aware of the
      importance of education and mobilized to participate in school development planning and other local
      education initiatives.

  •   Parent education: Parents and other community members are educated on issues affecting
      children, such as children's rights, parenting, nutrition and development.
Regional Activities
  •   Children's events: Day of the African Child, Universal Children's Week and other children's
      events are organized to promote children's rights, especially as they relate to education.

  •   Action research: Research is conducted on emerging education issues, such as the effects
      of Free Primary Education, barriers to education for girls in the North Eastern Province, and unique
      educational needs of pastoralist children. The results and recommendations are used to influence
      community and government planning and inform intervention areas.

  •   Media campaigns: Radio interviews and educational programs are carried out to raise
      awareness and advocate for education.
