EMACK in the Coast Province
In Eastern Kenya's Coast Province, EMACK seeks to create an early childhood and lower primary school learning environment in which parents support, children enjoy, and teachers facilitate a quality education for all who attend. EMACK builds the capacity of communities to support effective educational programming; of MOEST to better respond to the educational needs of marginalized populations; trains teachers and works with curriculum development; share lessons learned, opportunities for replication and improves the capacity of partner personnel; Increase the chances for success in school of vulnerable children.
Partners
EMACK works through eight implementing partners, including three AKF projects -- the Kenya School Improvement Project (KENSIP); the Madrasa Resource Center (MRC); and the Coastal Rural Support Program (CRSP) -- local government partners -- the District Center for Early Childhood Education (DICECE) in Kwale, Mombasa, and Kilifi, DICECE Kilifi, the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK), and the Coalition for the Promotion and Development of the Child in the Coast Region (COPDEC).
Kenya School Improvement Project (KENSIP)
Declining academic standards in East Africa led to AKF's first school improvement project in 1985 in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania which focused on the development of curricula, learning resources and teaching strategies for primary schools. In 1990, the first AKF SIP was launched in Mombasa, and in 2000, the Kenya School Improvement Project (KENSIP) was introduced. KENSIP builds on the Mombasa SIP and extends SIP activities into rural Kwale district. KENSIP works towards improving the quality of primary education by making learning a more meaningful and positive experience for both teachers and students and also by providing holistic training to everyone involved in the education process - from head teachers to community members and even education officials at the district level.
Madrasa Resource Center (MRC)
Launched by AKF in 1986 in Mombasa, Kenya, the Madrasa Resource Center was established to improve the overall educational attainments of Muslim youth by implementing a two-year, four-stage approach to quality, community-based early childhood education and development, which is at the same time effective, relevant to the local context, and financially sustainable. MRC was established in response to a concern expressed by Muslim communities' about their children's understanding of their local culture and religion and to increasing their chances for later access to and success in formal education.
Coastal Rural Support Program (CRSP)
Established in 1997 by AKF, the Coastal Rural Support Program (CRSP) is a participatory rural development project that links elements such as rural savings and credit, natural resource management, infrastructure development, agricultural productivity and human capacity development to an overall community development strategy. In 2004, in response to a need expressed by the communities in which it works, CRSP expanded its intervention areas to include early childhood development.
District Center for Early Childhood Education (DICECE) Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Garissa
The District Centers for Early Childhood Education are responsible for pre-school teacher training, community mobilization around issues of early childhood education and for monitoring and evaluation district programs.
Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK)
The Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) is an NGO that focuses on the physically disabled in Kenya. APDK operates four projects in the Coast Province: the APDK Rehabilitation Clinic, the Bombolulu Cultural Center, the Likoni Furniture Workshop and the Faida (benefit) Microfinance Project.
Coalition for the Promotion and Development of the Child in the Coast Region (COPDEC)
Formally established in September 2004, the Coalition for the Promotion and Development of the Child in the Coast Region (COPDEC) brings together NGOs, community-based organizations and the Kenyan government and others working in early childhood development to coordinate activities and advocacy efforts, build capacity and share resources and innovations in promoting cognitive, social and physical development in young children.
