2. Training on Early Childhood Care and Education: Unit 1: The importance of early childhood care and education; theoretical bases of child development and recent findings in brain development. Unit 2: Cognitive development, particularly pre-literacy and pre-math. Unit 3: Social-emotional development. Unit 4: Physical development, including motor skills, health and nutrition. Unit 5: Curriculum planning; self-evaluation; caregiver and child observation; coaching and peer review practice. For each unit of training, the staff worked on research, materials design and methodologies. Staff members travelled to the eastern, western and central regions of El Salvador to train fifteen to twenty pedagogical advisors in each region. They later returned to the same regions and, with the pedagogical advisors' participation, facilitated five sessions in each region for groups of 35- 45 pre-school and kindergarten teachers. At the conclusion of this process, 50 pedagogical advisors and 450 teachers had increased knowledge related to child development and increased skills with which to put their knowledge to use. One thousand technicians and professionals from different institutions (including NGO's) had improved their skills for working with parents who, as a result, provided better care for and educate their children. The EDIFAM team's approach to training is active and participatory, allowing for interaction between facilitators and participants as well as among the participants themselves. The participants regularly express appreciation for the opportunity to take part in the events and affirm that their interactive nature helps the participants put their learning in action in the classroom.
