Closing Celebration"It was all beneficial for the children," Ana Rosa Morán told the newspaper La Prensa Gráfica while a dozen children played with modeling clay around her. Based on their public remarks, the dignitaries in attendance at EDIFAM's closing celebration agreed with the teacher from the children's integrated development center Sala Cuna Externa.

Present at the Table of Honor for the May 11 celebration were the First Lady of El Salvador, Ana Ligia de Saca; the United States Ambassador to El Salvador, Douglas Barclay; the Director of USAID/El Salvador, Mark Silverman; and the Ministers of Education and Health, Darlyn Meza and José Guillermo Maza, respectively. Approximately 150 invitees also participated, representing the various sectors that benefited from EDIFAM's activities.

Governmental and non-governmental institutions which worked with EDIFAM since 1998 presented to the participants and the press the achievements and successes of EDIFAM for children aged birth to six.

EDIFAM presented the program's results and products, including training materials for educators and teachers in the formal and non-formal sectors, support for the development and implementation of a new Early Childhood Curriculum, the use of new, participatory educational strategies such as Family Schools, and a public awareness campaign promoting early childhood education and development.

"Early childhood is a time of life that helps determine the destiny of individuals in a society," Mrs. de Saca stated, highlighting the importance of healthy development, support for pre-literacy and stimulating educational activities for children at this young age. With EDIFAM's support, that destiny will include better chances to succeed in first grade and beyond for many rural Salvadoran children.
