OVC Population of Swaziland

Photo of a child in Swaziland EQUIP1 will assist the OVC population of Swaziland in breaking the cycle of poverty, HIV/AIDS, and orphan hood. There are already some 60,000 AIDS orphans in Swaziland, and the numbers are projected to increase. EQUIP1 consulted with key actors in government and in non-government organizations to identify potential activities for USAID funding. It was decided that EQUIP1 would provide funding to the National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS in Swaziland to launch activities that help ensure that AIDS orphans, especially older heads of household, receive an adequate education and are integrated into community support structures. This will be achieved through programs that provide instruction and involve community help with agriculture for food security, teach basic literacy and numeracy and HIV/AIDS awareness to older heads of household.

The Educational Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP) is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development under the Cooperative Agreement #GDG-A-00-03-0006-00.
