Lesotho Herd Boys
EQUIP1 was asked to investigate interventions targeting the herd boys of Lesotho, in particular their access to basic education. There are an estimated 30,000 herd boys, many of whom spend several months in the mountains tending small groups of livestock. Unable to attend school, denied the socialization process of a normal childhood, and exposed to harsh weather and human dangers such as cattle rustlers, these boys have little chance to break out of the cycle of poverty. EQUIP1 team members met with government officials, donors and NGOs to assess and determine where and how USAID's funding might be most effectively used to help the herd boys. In conjunction with the Lesotho Distance Teaching Center, which is the government unit responsible for providing education to herd boys, a decision was made to use the funding for equipment that would be used in the 180 Learning Posts, in five of the ten districts in Lesotho that teach basic literacy and numeracy and provide skills training in the remote, mountainous areas.
